Structural Humidity Control

Structural Humidity Control is important to us because humidity contributes to pest issues.

Selling, installing and servicing high quality dehumidifiers is an important Integrated Pest Management (IPM) tool to help reduce pests and pesticide use.  House centipedes, for example, will thrive in a moist basement because they feed on smaller insects that feed on fungal growth.  By drying out your basement, fungus is reduced and insect activity is reduced.  As important as controlling pests a dehumidifier imporves the air quality in your home.  About half of the air in your home comes up to the living space from your basement (or crawl space).  If you have finished basement space the air quality is directly impacted by the relative humidity.  High humidity leads to fungus and mold growth, insect infestations, structural issues and poor indoor air quality.

  • Select and prepare the space

The most important part of selecting a dehumidifier is understanding the size of the space you are trying to dehumidify.  Pick a location you can directly plug a dehumidifier in to the wall outlet – do not try to use an extension cord to set up a dehumidifier.  You will need a second outlet available to attach a pump.  A large energy efficient dehumidifier will create a great deal of water, often more than 100 pints a day.  There is no bucket.  It has to have a condensate pump attached to it ejecting the water outside.

  • Machine Selection

After determining where the machine will go, select the correct machine.  For a powerful and reliable basement machine, consider the Santa Fe Classic.  It offers a vertical configuration allowing for it to be placed in a utility room or closet.  The pump is easily attached to the machine.  It produces over 100 pints a day and can be configured with a duct kit to allow it flexibility in positioning.  Want the most energy efficient dehumidifier, then the Santa Fe Impact 105 is the correct choice.  It offers the best energy factor available and can be hung from the floor joists in a crawl or placed on the ground in a basement.  The optional pump and duct kit are easy to attach.  For a small basement or tight crawl space the economical Santa Fe Compact 70 fits the bill.  With a pump kit and hang kit this machine will run quietly suspended off the floor joists removing 70 pints of water a day.  It can be set up with an optional duct kit for dehumidifying other areas.

  • Filters

Your Santa Fe dehumidifier needs new filters every 3 months.  We sell filters for the machines that we carry.  Shipment or delivery to metro-Boston is available.

  • Service

In the rare event your Santa Fe dehumidifier needs service, Greenhow is here to help.  We stock parts for the machines we carry and service the machines at your property.  For refrigerant or compressor issues, we offer machine pickup and return service to customers in Massachusetts.  Warranty repairs may require the machine be sent back to the manufacturer.  We have all the original packaging material and expertise to get your machine back and forth to Wisconsin.

I have kids and pets so I wanted to avoid the crazy chemicals while still getting rid of the ants that had raided the cat food bowl and then made them selves at home in our bathroom. GreenHow was easy to deal with, prompt, and quickly found the source of my ant problem... and got rid of the ants. They are now my pest control company of choice!

I now have a go-to exterminator!

They came out very quickly (one business day from when I called), were thorough in their investigation, and gave us an incredibly reasonable quote for pest control for other "guests" that we have like carpenter ants.  I was very surprised at their low initial and quarterly costs compared to their high level of service and commitment to using natural products.
