Like many New England towns, Arlington was settled by English settlers in 1635. At the time, the city was heavily centered around the Mystic River and the Mill Brook stream. Historians theorize that with the construction of several mills, these waterfront accesses heavily impacted Arlington’s early local economy.
During those first few years, Arlington started as a thriving farming community that specialized in growing lettuce. The town also specialized in the ice industry, where “Ice King” Frederic Tudor sent ice from Spy Pond to the Caribbean and India.
Today, Arlington remains a growing city, with more than 40 thousand residents spread across ten smaller neighborhoods. However, Arlington is also a hot spot for unwanted pests with access to several rivers and streams.
