Settled in 1630 by English immigrants, Medford was originally part of Charlestown. The small town didn’t gain its independence until 1892—but even so, this small town has an impressive mix of notable and memorable histories.
In fact, famous songs and poems like “Jingle Bells” and “Over the River and Through the Woods” were inspired by and written in Medford. And interestingly, the creation of the invasive and destructive Gypsy moth was started by French astronomer and naturalist, Leopold Trouvelot.
By 1892, Medford was a center of industry and heavily manufactured tiles, crackers, bricks, rum, and even clipper ships. By 1900, Medford’s existing farmland was divided into lots and sold to build residential and commercial buildings.
However, even with modern upgrades, old farmland is notorious for unwanted pest infestations.
