Acton is a small town with a population of nearly 11 thousand residents. Even so, it has a rich history as one of the most water-dependent cities in Massachusetts.
Acton has nine drumlins, which are hills composed of glacial till from the last Ice Age nearly 12 thousand years ago. Because of this, Acton was popularly used for industrialized water mills and selling ice to surrounding areas thanks to its kettle ponds.
Today, almost all of Acton is forested, although some parts have been cleared for residential, agricultural, and commercial use by corporations. However, with so much access to ponds and swamps, it’s not uncommon to come across annoying pests like mosquitos, ticks, and other unwanted creatures.
